INCOME GENERATION PROJECT One of the means by which KWO achieves its aims is through its Income Generation Project (IGP). The IGP began in 2002 to promote self-sufficiency and improve living standards in the refugee camps. The project provides an opportunity for people in the camps to earn an income, enabling them to support their families. The IGP promotes and maintains Karen culture by encouraging the women to continue the practice of their traditional textile arts. It also helps to finance further training of women in sewing, weaving, small business management and design, which helps them to build on their existing skill base. Funds generated by the sale of products feeds back into KWO.This enables KWO to support much-needed projects such as safe houses to combat domestic violence problems, orphanages, basic health care and education. The IGP is currently financing one objective to provide every woman in the refugee camps with a woven sarong. Another endeavour focuses on sewing machine training for internally displaced women living in the northern districts of the Karen State in Burma.
